So instead of guessing, here’s a method to find the right pricing for YOU.
Step 1: Start with a Quick Estimate
If you’re just starting out, use this simple formula to get a rough idea of your baseline rate:
🔹 (Desired monthly income ÷ billable hours) = internal hourly rate
👉 Example Calculation:
- You want to earn £3,000 per month.
- You plan to work 60 billable hours per month.
- Your internal hourly rate = £3,000 ÷ 60 = £50 per hour.
This isn’t what you should charge clients per hour, it’s just a baseline to keep to yourself to guide your pricing.
Step 2: Adjust for a More Accurate Rate

Think beyond survival: what do you need to live comfortably and grow your business?

2. Add Business Expenses
Freelancers pay for all of these expenses, and many of these costs are very much dependent on the country where you live:

- Marketing & website costs

- If your income goal is £50,000, add £15,000 for expenses (~30%).

3. Adjust for Time Off & Admin Work
When you work as a freelancer, not all your time is spent writing. Some of it is “non-billable”, meaning you don’t get paid directly for it, but it’s still important work.
